Jordan Love has made a lot of extra money with the Green Bay Packers win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. And that's not even because the Packers will eventually give him a big-time extension — and they will.
It's because Love had a lot of incentives in the one-year extension he signed last offseason, and many of them were tied to the Packers making the playoffs — which they did — and Love playing a certain percentage of the offensive snaps — which he had already realistically reached.
From the available money, Jordan Love has gotten $4.5 million. He left $2 million on the table by not being selected to the Pro Bowl and not being a top 10 quarterback in completion percentage and passer rating.
There is still $2.5 million available, depending on the Packers performance in the playoffs. For Love to reach everything possible left, Green Bay would need to win the Super Bowl.
Check out the incentives in details:
What he's reached
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps
- $500,000 top 10 in touchdown passes (2nd)
- $500,000 top 10 in passing yards (6th)
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + playoffs
- $1 million for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + playoffs OR 65% of snaps + top 10 in passer rating (12th) + top 10 in TD passes (3rd)
Capped in 3 out of 4:
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 16 in passer rating (11th)
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 16 in passing yards (6th)
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 16 in passing TDs (2nd)
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 16 in completion percentage (21st)
What's still on the line
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + 1 playoff win
- $1 million for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + win the NFC
- $1 million for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + win the Super Bowl
What he won't get
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 10 in completion percentage (21st)
- $1 million for making the Pro Bowl
- $500,000 for playing 65% of the offensive snaps + top 10 in passer rating (11th)
That's mostly why the Jordan Love extension was smart for both sides. The quarterback was slated to make around $3 million in 2023, and instead he immediately got $9.8 million. Now, with the incentives, the value goes to at least $14.3 million.
Next year, Love is slated to make $6 million, but it's highly likely that the Packers find a way to give him a long-term deal.
For the Packers, the extension made sense because it avoided a fifth-year option scenario, where the team would have to guarantee $20 million in 2024 salary for the quarterback, without as much salary cap flexibility. Now, they have more leverage to negotiate a new deal.
Jordan Love is the big reason why the Packers are here
