The San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens are a few hours away from what is the most anticipated matchup of the year.

Not only does the game feature the top two teams in their respective conferences, but it also has the top two MVP candidates via Brock Purdy and Lamar Jackson.

That puts an onus on Lamar Jackson's performance, especially when you consider the landscape of NFL History:

Potential to Join Elite Company

Via Theanalyst

If Lamar Jackson can capture his second NFL MVP this year, he will become only the eighth player to do so, and the seventh QB.

The only thing standing in his way: Brock Purdy

Purdy is currently the favorite to win the award with -250 odds opposed to Jackson's +400. He currently leads Jackson in passing yards, completion percentage, TDs, and QB rating, to name a few.

But MVP shouldn't be about stats. It should be about who is most valuable to their team.

We've seen a similar 49ers team go to the Super Bowl with Jimmy G at QB but watched the Ravens struggle down season's stretch with players like Tyler Huntley as their signal caller when you compare his play to Jackson's.

Not to mention, Jackson is having one of, if not the best years of his career without TE and safety blanket Mark Andrews, who was lost to injury halfway through the year.

But the biggest determinant in who wins MVP should be head-to-head.

Sure, wins and losses aren't a QB stat, but the eye test should play a healthy role in deciding who earns the award following tonight's game no matter who wins.

So we'll see if Lamar can all but cement his status in upset fashion and march down the path of NFL lore, or if Brock Purdy can go from Mr. Irrelevnat to MVP.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (24) sacks Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis (7) during the second half of an NFL International Series game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ravens’ Jadeveon Clowney draws major respect from 49ers’ George Kittle

Jadeveon Clowney has turned back the clock in his first season with the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore entered the season hoping that Clowney could add a veteran presence to its front seven, and the AFC North side have so far received much more from the outside linebacker. Clowney currently ranks second on the team in both […]
