What a holiday weekend it was for the Detroit Lions. They captured their first divsion title in 30 years and are now guaranteed to host a playoff game. That's not all though. The Lions are also now part of a three way tie for the NFC's best record and after the 49ers lost to the Ravens on Christmas night, the Lions chances at having the number one seed went up.

They came into the week with a 1% chance and they left with a 5% chance. Here's  the current playoff picture and how the Lions can achieve that number one seed.

  1. 49ers: 11-4 -y
  2. Eagles: 11-4 -x
  3. Lions: 11-4 -y
  4. Buccaneers: 8-7
  5. Cowboys: 10-5 -x
  6. Rams: 8-7
  7. Seahawks: 8-7

Y means clinched divsion and X means clinched playoffs.

What the Lions have to do:

It's very simple. They have to win. They  can do their part by simply making sure that they win the final two games of the year and end the season with a 13-4 record. Just beating the Cowboys this Saturday raises their chances from 5% to 16%. They have to then beat the Vikings too. This one is likely coming down to the wire. Don't expect the Lions to rest any starters this year.

What everyone else has to do

Here's the thing, there is no everyone else. There's just the 49ers and all they have to do is lose one game. That's it. Just one. They've got two games left. One against the lowly Commanders and one against Matthew Stafford and the Rams. It's obviously the latter game that has people thinking it's possible. The Rams have been surging lately. They've won five of the last six games and they have a chance to beat this 49ers team. As far as the Commanders go, they've lost the last six and would be playing for pride. That can be dangerous sometimes, but I don't see them beating the 49ers.

That's it. That's all that needs to be done. Win the final two games and hope the 49ers lose one and the Lions get a first round playoff bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Should be an interesting couple weeks.

Jared Goff gets emotional in post game interview after win

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been through a lot in his career. The Rams very publicly gave up on him after the 2020 season and traded him to the Lions. It was thought that he was nothing more than a bridge guy that the Lions would just move on from.  In year three he […]
