The New York Jets made a very controversial roster move last week, elevating quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the active roster despite his admission that he will not play this season.
To make room for him, the Jets released FB Nick Bawden, re-signing him to the practice squad soon after.
Rodgers joined the Pat McAfee show on Tuesday for his weekly appearance and addressed the controversial move for the first time since it was made official.
"I was, again, targeting the 24th to come back, so I assumed I was going to go on IR," Rodgers said. "(I) asked to be put on IR because there was a conversation, 'do you want to practice," (And I responded) 'not at the expense of somebody getting cut.'"
"I didn't feel like I needed to practice to continue my rehab. I could do on-the-field stuff on the side," Rodgers added. "But obviously, I got overruled there."
As for the player that was cut, Rodgers made sure to reach out to him immediately after the decision was made.
"I called Nick right away. I just said, 'Hey, I just hope you know this isn't coming from me. I asked them to put me on IR," Rodgers explained. "He would have gotten activated this past week if he'd been healthy, but he'll be back up this week I'm sure."
Rodgers went down just 75 seconds into his debut with the Jets after being sacked by Leonard Floyd. He originally stood up, but immediately sat back down on the ground and trainers rushed over to him.
He was then helped off the field, limping to the sideline and Zach Wilson came in to replaced Rodgers. A cart was brought over to the sidelines soon after and Rodgers was loaded onto the back and brought back into the locker room.
An MRI later confirmed that Rodgers torn his Achilles.
While everyone hoped for a miraculous return this season, it doesn't seem likely that will be happening.
