The Miami Dolphins' defense has been downright scary since the weekend before Halloween. That coincides with a big shot in the arm the Dolphins received with the return of one of their most important players.
Jalen Ramsey made his season debut on October 29 against the New England Patriots. It turned out to be a loud entrance for the former All-Pro. Ramsey picked off two passes in the Dolphins' 31-17 win over the Patriots.
The game turned out to be a turning point for a Dolphins defense that had struggled in October, when the Dolphins allowed 31+ points to both the Bills and Eagles. The numbers prove it.
Had the Dolphins not admittedly taken their foot off the gas in the second half against the Tennessee Titans, those numbers would be even more impressive.
Since Ramsey's return, the Dolphins have allowed more than 21 points only one time. That was the aforementioned late fourth-quarter meltdown against the Titans. They shut out the Kansas City Chiefs in the second half in a 21-14 loss and held the explosive Dallas Cowboys to 20 points last Sunday.
Ramsey has been a stalwart opposite Xavien Howard, which has given Miami one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL in the second half of the season. He's earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 76.7 in 454 snaps so far this season with an impressive catch percentage by opponents of 46.7% (14 catches in 30 targets). Ramsey's return has also allowed Kader Kohou to move from the perimeter back to the slot, where he's more naturally suited and has played his best football.
The real challenge started last weekend against Dallas, and the Dolphins' defense passed the test. Their toughest challenge lies ahead over the next two weeks against two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
If the Dolphins' defense can continue the level of play they've been at since Ramsey returned to the field, then the sky is the limit for a team with very lofty expectations.
