The Patriots traveled to Denver on Christmas Eve, earning themselves a nice present while handing the Broncos a big lump of coal. And after Chad Ryland kicked the game-winning field goal, the Broncos playoff hopes became much lower.

Multiple sources report that the Broncos are benching starting quarterback Russell Wilson for the team's final two games of the regular season. And now a former Patriot gets a chance, with Jarrett Stidham set to start.
Wilson will serve as the backup for the remainder of the season.
While they are out of playoff contention, the New England Patriots still ended Wilson's season after the strong win. This might come second in line of times the Patriots have ruined the quarterback's season.
The top one is obviously the goal-line interception in Super Bowl XLIX, when Malcolm Butler snagged Wilson's pass and solidified the win for the Patriots.
The Broncos still have a slight chance of making the playoffs, needing to win their final two games against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders. And they will also need some other teams to lose.
This move preserves the "financial flexibility" for the Broncos this offseason. Wilson has $37 million injury guarantee for 2025 that will become fully guaranteed in March. This move is to make sure that he doesn't suffer an injury and will be good to go. Especially if Wilson isn't in Denver next season.
