It shouldn't be a surprise — the Carolina Panthers are going to do everything they can to preserve the future of rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
In many ways, he is the crown jewel of the organization. The franchise traded away a considerable amount of future assets to draft Young out of Alabama No. 1 overall. And as the trade deadline approaches, Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson theorized the team may sacrifice Burns in order to invest in Young.
"As much as they’d like to keep pass rusher Brian Burns long term, sources familiar with team owner David Tepper have told Yahoo Sports that the priority in the organization in the near-term is to use assets to help fortify the future of quarterback Bryce Young," Robinson writes.
"What they’d like to do is acquire a nice young offensive piece to help Young (preferably a skill position player). That is going to come with cost. And that cost is listening to offers on Burns, who will carry a significant $11 million in salary cap load to any team that acquires him, as well as necessitating a contract extension."
Burns and the Panthers haven't found common ground on a contract extension. To add, Burns wants to win. The Panthers don't appear poised to be in that position any time soon.
Moving on from Burns would be a sacrifice, but it would also be an investment in the future of Young — the team's prized quarterback.
