Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers defensive star, isn't expected to be traded ahead of the trade deadline, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

The Panthers stand winless to this point in the season. Burns has sought a long-term contract with the team, but the two sides haven't seen communicating recently. Some reports have suggested the Panthers are going to move on from Burns and recoup some assets lost in the trade that netted the team the No. 1 overall pick. However, some of those discussions have stalled.

"As for the best Panthers pass rusher, Brian Burns, I do not get the sense Carolina is expecting to trade him, but they have been getting calls on him," Russini wrote.

If the Panthers don't trade Burns, it could indicate that the team will be willing to franchise tag him.

Through six games, Burns has played his part. He has four sacks, nine quarterback hits, 20 tackles, and a forced fumble.

He is bound to land a huge deal if the Panthers let him walk. But, it probably isn't in the team's best interest to not move Burns at the deadline and then lose him for nothing. If a trade doesn't get done before Oct. 31, that could indicate the Panthers offseason plan for Burns.
