The Kansas City Chiefs got the worst possible news they could get regarding an injury to a star defender.
According to multiple reports, Chiefs LB Nick Bolton needs to get surgery on his dislocated wrist suffered in the Week 7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Bolton hurt his wrist while tackling Chargers WR Keenan Allen, leaving the game with just over six minutes remaining.
While several reports don't list a recovery timeline, NFL Network's Tom Peliserro suggests that this will be two months.
This type of timeline tracks for a lunate wrist dislocation injury, which features both broken bones and ligament damage. He'll need that roughly two-month rehab and recovery timeline in order for both the bones and ligaments to properly heal.
Obviously, Kansas City had hoped that MRI and X-rays would reveal the best, but this is the exact opposite for Bolton. He's going to miss extended time and might not be ready to return until practically the playoffs. The optimistic timeline has Bolton returning from IR in December, but I'm told that the results of the surgery could dictate a longer absence.
Drue Tranquill will slot in as the Chiefs' middle linebacker in Bolton's absence. He started three games at MIKE linebacker from Week 3 through Week 5 while Bolton was out with a high ankle sprain. He's beginning to look like one of Brett Veach's best acquisitions of the 2023 NFL offseason given that he's performed admirably so far and looks to be a starter for the next eight-plus weeks.
