When the Philadelphia Eagles signed All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones this past Tuesday, they had no intention of making him their No. 1 wideout, replacing DeVonta Smith or A.J. Brown.
Instead, they wanted to add quality depth at the position due to Quez Watkins' injury and potential future injuries.
And after watching Jones during a private workout, they liked what they saw from the 12-year veteran and made the decision to sign him.
So, what's the plan for Jones?
Head coach Nick Sirianni and the Eagles don't want to get ahead of themselves as they are not ignorant of the fact that Jones is no longer the young buck he once was and is more prone to injury.
For now, Jones will be stashed on the practice squad and learn the offense.
When the Eagles are ready to elevate him or sign him to their active roster, the Eagles will have him on a pitch count.
"Julio, you’re going to be tempted to want to put him in because he’s a phenomenal player that’s done a lot in this league," Sirianni told reporters on Friday. "We are going to have to make sure that we’re not putting him in danger. Doing what we need do to help us win the game and doing what he needs to do to help us win the game, and also being smart with his rep count just because of elevated risk of injury if you put him in for too much."
Whether or not Jones plays on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins remains to be seen.
However, it's clear that the Eagles are going to take it easy on the 34-year-old and focus on his health instead of getting carelessly carried away by the incredible receiver he once was.
As for Jones, he can't wait to show everyone what he has in store.
“Just keep watching," Jones said after signing with the Eagles. I ain’t going to make no expectations but just keep watching and I can show you…
"I’m here to dominate."
