Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones have two things in common: They both played college ball at Alabama and are currently quarterbacks in the AFC East.

Yet while the Dolphins are having a fairly successful season, the New England Patriots are struggling. And because of that, a question was brought up during Devin McCourty's weekly appearance on WEEI, asking if Tagovailoa would fit in with the Patriots and vice versa for Jones.

And McCourty didn't hold back.

“I do think Tua would struggle in New England," the former Patriots captain said on The Greg Hill Show. "But I will say I think Tua really runs that offense really well. It’s hard to anticipate if Mac could easily go run that offense. I’ve never seen him do it. But I will say one of the hard things of judging the Miami offense and how they do things is they’ve had other quarterbacks in there that have played and no matter how great you think Tyreek Hill is or Jaylen Waddle, the offense hasn’t been the same.”

“We played them last year with Teddy Bridgewater in there and it was different," McCourty added. "So I think if you give Mac a year in that offense, it’s such a heavy timing offense with motions and all of that, I think he would have elite numbers in that offense as well.”

Jones had a strong rookie season in 2021, finishing with 352 completions for 3,801 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and 1 interception along with 44 carries for 129 rushing yards, but no touchdowns.

However, he took a step back last season under the direction of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge running the offense. And this season hasn't been much better despite bringing in Bill O'Brien as the offensive coordinator, due to a lack of weapons on offense and a struggling offensive line.

So far this season, Jones has 154 completions for 1,480 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions along with 19 carries for 70 rushing yards across seven games.

As for Tagovailoa, the quarterback joined the league one year before Jones, being drafted by the Dolphins with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

This season alone, Tagovailoa has 163 completions for 2,092 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns and six interceptions, along with 15 carries for 18 rushing yards.

But when you look at the rosters, the difference in receivers is apparent, with Hill already having 53 receptions for 902 yards and seven touchdowns. For the Patriots, it's Kendrick Bourne who is leading the charge with 34 reception for 370 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

That's quite the difference.

However if Jones had better weapons, McCourty believes that the statistics would be much different this season for the third-year quarterback.

“But if you swapped them right away and Mac had a week or two weeks to try and run the offense at a high level, I think that would be hard with their style. It’s not a typical offense in the NFL,” McCourty said. “I think if you put Mac in there and he had a season or half a season to get acclimated, I think he would have unbelievable numbers there as well.”
