After a week in which it initially looked as if the San Francisco 49ers would have to turn to Sam Darnold at quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals, Brock Purdy is now in line to get the all clear.

Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Friday that the 49ers quarterback practiced in full in the final session before the Week 8 contest, having been placed in the concussion protocol earlier this week.

Purdy is now set to pass protocol this weekend and start on Sunday, though the 49ers potentially face a longer wait to find out if another key offensive player will be able to go.

Injury report observations

Like Purdy, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is listed as questionable, but the prospect of him playing looks a much less likely one.

Williams, per Kyle Shanahan, did "the beginning part" of Friday's practice, but was not involved in anything "against each other" as he aims to return from the ankle injury that kept him out of Monday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Indicating that Williams could be a game-time decision, Shanahan said of his progress:

"Better than last week but still not sure. He's got improve in the next 48 hours, he can go up until kickoff, though."

Though Williams' stand-in, Jaylon Moore, acquitted himself respectably against the Vikings, the absence of the elder statesman on the 49er offensive line was keenly felt, especially in the run game. The Niners, struggling significantly against the Vikings' six-man front, managed just 65 yards on the ground.

They'll obviously hope for a much improved rushing performance against the Bengals, a game they approach with no lingering concerns over Christian McCaffrey's oblique injury after the do-it-all running back practiced in full throughout the week.

Should he score on Sunday, it will mark McCaffrey's 17th successive game (including playoffs) with a touchdown and tie the all-time record set by Lenny Moore.
