The San Francisco 49ers may have suffered their first loss on Sunday, but it ended up not being too damaging to their hopes of being the NFC's number one seed thanks to the efforts of a former assistant.
San Francisco went into the day as one of the two remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL, and the 49ers' defeat to the Cleveland Browns on Jake Moody's missed potential game-winning field goal risked giving the Philadelphia Eagles the initiative in the race for the one seed.
However, former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh did the 49ers a solid, as his New York Jets team stunned the Eagles 20-14, taking some of the sting out of San Francisco's loss.
The Niners are now in a three-way tie with the Eagles and Detroit Lions atop the NFC at 5-1.
Had third-round rookie Moody been able to send his kick slightly more to the left, the 49ers would be sitting pretty as the last unbeaten and in a very strong position in the battle for the only bye in the NFC playoffs.
It is a missed opportunity for a team that missed several chances to take a commanding lead against Cleveland, but thanks to the last man to lead the 49er defense in a Super Bowl, it is a slip-up that doesn't hurt as much as it could have done, and the top seed is still very much in play.
