NASHVILLE — Thanks to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, we now know the severity of Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s ankle injury.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said during Monday’s press conference that Tannehill’s injury was similar to the one he suffered last season. But Darlington was able to report on Tuesday morning that Tannnehill will not require surgery on the ankle.

Tannehill has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. That’s the same injury he had the first time around last season that kept him out of games against the Texans and the Chiefs.

Considering the circumstances, this feels like the best case scenario for the Titans. But the question still remains – Can Tannehill play vs. Atlanta after the bye week?

Personally, I’d lean towards saying no. We saw last year that just because you can play doesn’t mean you should. A hobbled Tannehill might not be what the Titans need at quarterback and there’s an obvious risk of reinjury that comes with hurrying back into game action. The Titans also play on Thursday Night Football in Pittsburgh the week after taking on the Falcons. That poses a challenge to Tannehill as well.

It probably makes more sense for Tennessee to roll with Malik Willis or Will Levis (preferably Levis) against Atlanta and turn things back over to Tannehill when he’s closer to 100 percent .

I’m sure there will be some Titans fans out there making a case for Tannehill to never take back over as the starter even when healthy. But Mike Vrabel made it clear on Monday that Tannehill is still the guy. "Yeah. If Ryan can go, he’ll be our quarterback," said Vrabel.

At 2-4, the Titans are on the ropes, but they are not going to roll over. The hope for now is still that Ryan Tannehill can help Tennessee win football games down the stretch of the season. It’s good news that his injury isn’t too severe with a weaker section of the schedule coming up.
