The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be the type of team that makes big moves during the season, but they certainly aren't above getting better at key areas if the right deal presents itself.
Perhaps such a deal could be in the works for the team that surprised most of the NFL world by starting 3-1.
After the Colts gave Jonathan Taylor a massive payday and extension, Indy is now left with an interesting problem given the fact that Zach Moss is playing the best football of his career. Tampa Bay could take advantage here.
While Colts fans and others around the NFL may rule this thought out immediately, hear us out.
The Colts are sure to be happy to have two very talented running backs that they can rely on, especially given Jonathan Taylor's history with injuries. Keeping two guys like this would look a lot like what the Cleveland Browns did with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, and the results there were very impressive.
Still, that relies on Moss being okay taking a massive step back once Taylor is back up to speed, and that is likely a lot to bank on.
It isn't easy getting paid as a running back in the NFL. Taylor proves that as well as anyone. If that is the case, why would Moss be okay moving into a secondary role despite starting the season on pace for 1,493 yards?
(That average comes from the first three games that Moss played.)
Now, even with Taylor back, Moss is currently leading the team in attempts, rushing yards, and touchdowns. This was expected to a degree with Taylor slowly working back in, but even then this is an impressive line for the apparent RB2.
A guy with heat like this can't give up the opportunity to get a chance to carry this over a season and get a payday like Taylor. Moss should want to be somewhere else if the Colts intend to use their more expensive back, and that is where the Bucs can step in.
Nothing is set in stone in the Buccaneer backfield. Tampa's run game has been bad through four weeks and new blood would help.
Assuming Moss wants out, the Colts would be wise to get even some late-round picks for their RB2, especially if that opens the way to get the most of the monstrous Taylor extension.
It may not be a perfect situation, but the Buccaneers need to keep their eyes on this situation. It may open the door for something interesting.
Buccaneers define themselves in dominant Week 4 win
You can’t argue with those results.
