Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel was asked on Monday during his weekly press conference if he watched Oklahoma's win against Texas in the Red River Rivalry this past weekend.
Heupel, who led Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000 as the Sooners' starting quarterback, said he only saw the final drive of OU's 34-30 win against the Longhorns.
"I saw the last drive," said Heupel. "Great job by Dillon (Gabriel) and that offensive unit. That was not the game that I was watching early in the day."
Gabriel, Oklahoma's starting quarterback, was previously coached by Heupel for two seasons (2019 and 2020) at UCF (Gabriel transferred to Oklahoma after the 2021 season).
Additionally, Sooners offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was on Heupel's staff at UCF in 2018 and 2019 (Lebby, who also went to college at Oklahoma, met Heupel in the early to mid 2000s in Norman).
Naturally, when Heupel said he wasn't watching the Red River Shootout on Saturday, questions popped up about which game he was checking out.
We already know that Heupel planned to watch his son play football on Saturday morning.
But as for which college football game Heupel was watching at noon?
It seems like there's only one logical answer.
LSU and Missouri played at noon ET on Saturday. And since the Vols will play Missouri later this season, it seems likely that Heupel checked out that game instead of his alma mater's big game against Texas.
And from there, I'm guessing Heupel probably checked out the Alabama vs Texas A&M game (Tennessee's next two opponents) before eventually landing on Kentucky vs Georgia (also two of the Vols' opponents later this season).
Even on a bye week, Heupel was still in coach mode while joining the rest of us on the couch on an October college football Saturday.
