The New York Jets could look a little different in the secondary this Sunday when they take on the Denver Broncos in Denver.

Star corner back D.J. Reed is in the concussion protocol it was revealed on Wednesday's press conference with head coach Robert Saleh.

"DJ Reed was entered into the concussion protocol. He won't practice today, but we are optimistic that he'll get everything cleared by gameday," said Saleh. "A couple of [concussion] symptoms, but we're optimistic."

Reed has started all 21 games for the Jets since signed as a free agent in 2022. He's made 28 tackles through the first four weeks of the 2023 season.

In order to play on Sunday, Reed must pass through the league-mandated five-phase protocol in order to return to full participation.

While the Jets are optimistic that Reed will be able to suit up on Sunday against the talented receivers in Denver, they have already announced they will be without cornerback Brandin Echols for the game.

Echols has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. The second-string cornerback, who plays a regular role on special teams, injured his hamstring in last Sunday night's loss to Kansas City. He missed the season opener due to a suspension but has appeared in all three games since.

"Echols, he's dealing with a hammy. He's gonna be out, for the game," said Saleh.

With the Jets possibly down two corners against Jerry Jeudy and Cortland Sutton, the team is bringing in free agent veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell for a workout.  Mitchell is a nine-year vet and has 56 starts in his career.

Mitchell spent 2022 with the Tennessee Titans and also had stints with the Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.

With Reed in danger of not playing, the Jets defensive backfield will be tested behind Sauce Gardner and slot corner Michael Carter.

After the Chiefs get a first down and ice the game, Jets head coach Robert Saleh argues a previous defensive holding call late in the game. The New York Jets host the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on October 1, 2023.

There are a lot of conspiracy theories that float around the NFL. From players fixing the score to refs changing outcomes to the famous one from former running back Arian Forster who said the NFL is actually scripted. Let me start by saying, I don’t believe any of them. I think players make mistakes. I […]
