Even after a game that saw him set the 49ers' franchise record for completion percentage, there are still plenty of observers unwilling to give Brock Purdy credit for his continued success as the starting quarterback.

Many still see Purdy's proficiency as being solely a product of Kyle Shanahan's quarterback friendly system, but the 49ers head coach had a clear message for those who subscribe to that school of thought.

"That's pretty ridiculous," Shanahan said on Wednesday when asked about those who believe Purdy's success is a just a result of the scheme. "You’ve just got to watch the tape. He plays at a high level every time he is been out there. And he’s done it in a lot of different situations versus a lot of different defenses, on the road, at home, playoff games, when injured. You can’t do all that stuff, he’s been out there too long. It’s on tape."

Shanahan was then asked about Purdy's ability to avoid turnovers. Purdy has not thrown an interception since the Week 17 game with the Raiders last year and has tossed only two picks since becoming the starter, with Shanahan impressed that his prowess in protecting the football is coupled with speed of thought and willingness to quickly get rid of the football.

He added:

"I think that’s what’s been great about him, that he lets it rip. He rarely hesitates but when it’s not there, he hasn’t just let it rip. He knows when to pull it back, he knows when to progress and try to make a play and that’s the fine line that you want guys who can make plays, but you don’t want guys to keep both teams in the game. So you’ve got to find a way to do both and he’s found that balance very well in all the games he’s played in. Of the guys I’ve coached, he’s up there with all of them. I’ve had a couple real good ones in that way and Brock’s right there with those guys. You can see that on his college tape. That’s what made him look so good on his tape and play at such a high level. And it hasn’t changed here."

There's no doubt the open looks Shanahan schemes up do have an influence on Purdy's lack of hesitation. At the same time, Purdy is excelling in a variety of areas, excelling throwing with anticipation, continuing to show poise under pressure and, against Arizona, hitting the deep ball with more success than he has done so in previous weeks. Purdy, per NextGen Stats, is eighth in the NFL in completion percentage over expectation.

His biggest test of the season comes on Sunday when he faces a Cowboys defense that gave him problems in the playoffs last season and, if Purdy passes that, the skeptics will look even more ridiculous.
