A month ago, the Cincinnati Bengals had legitimate Super Bowl aspirations. Now they're in absolute must-win territory against the Arizona Cardinals, a team many thought would be on their way to tanking the season away.

Another slip up in the desert, and the Bengals will be the ones in the fast lane towards a top draft pick. There's only one goal with their backs against the wall: Win at all cost.

Backs against the wall

Joe Burrow wasn't lying in saying this is a must-win game. The numbers are as bleak as they can be for teams that start 1-4. Cincinnati has turned around ugly starts in Burrow's tenure, but none were as dramatic as overcoming four losses in the first five weeks. This is as simple as it gets: The Bengals are playing playoff football in early October. Nobody wanted to play out this scenario, but it's the hand that's been dealt. Suck it up and win.

3 Bengals players to watch

  • WR Tyler Boyd: There was a time when Boyd was the No. 2 option in this offense. Hell, he was even the WR1 for a brief period of time when A.J. Green was down for the count. The Bengals might need him to be more of a prominent focus in the passing game with Tee Higgins questionable with a rib fracture. Even if Higgins dresses, Boyd should expect more targets come his way as the offense searches for anything sustainable.
  • TE Irv Smith Jr.: After missing two games with a hamstring injury, Cincinnati's starting tight end is set to make his return at the perfect time. Smith at his best is an athletic over-the-middle option who has speed to run away from linebackers and yards after catch ability. The Bengals need him to be what they signed him to be this offseason.
  • CB DJ Turner II: The training camp hype surrounding Turner seems to be legit as he's been as lockdown as he could've been through four weeks. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has given him ample run in relief for Chidobe Awuzie, and he may end up starting for Awuzie this week against a Cardinals passing attack that has been better than expected. Can the rookie keep up the pace?
