Thankfully for everyone involved, the Jonathan Taylor saga ends with a happy ending for the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts and Jonathan Taylor agreed to a three-year contract extension, ending all the drama that ensued this offseason.
Now that this is in the books, how did we finally get here?
Colts Side:
The national media coverage of this situation attempted to paint this situation in a false light. Statements such as "The Colts don't want to pay Taylor" or "The Colts don't value Taylor enough to pay him but want value in a trade." My sources with the team always denied this narrative, and this extension today officially buried it.
Stephen Holder of ESPN shared that Chris Ballard reached out to Taylor's camp recently to progress this situation.
A team source had this to say following the extension:
"We always wanted him here, and I'm glad Chris and co were able to get this done. Taylor is a high-level player that is going to help this team, and we are happy to put this behind us. Now we can all focus on what everyone cares about winning football games."
I followed up with a question on what changed from both sides to get here and got this response:
"In the end, this took both sides admitting they played a part in things getting as bad as they got. And compromise is the name of the game, and we saw both do just that. Huge respect for how both fixed this situation, and now all has been forgiven, let's go win some football games"
Taylors Representation:
Taylor ends up being the first winner for the RB market in quite some time with this deal. While 14 a year wasn't quite the number I was told he was seeking earlier this offseason, it is still a massive win for him and the RB market. Taking slightly less on the deal to get the Colts to play ball and speed up their desired timeline for his extension was a great compromise by both sides.
Taylor signed with First Round Management this offseason, and they were able to land him a contract extension in his first season with the agency. His agent, Malika Kawa, has been active on social media through this entire saga but has had a few posts today reacting to this deal being made public.
