The Minnesota Vikings got some brutal news on Tuesday when rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy was reported to have surgery on his meniscus. On Wednesday, head coach Kevin O'Connell told the media that McCarthy had successful surgery to repair the meniscus and he would miss the entire season.
Even with his injury, McCarthy has given Vikings fans hope that he is the quarterback of the future, especially when he led three touchdown drives against the Las Vegas Raiders. What he also did was set a record that the Vikings never wanted him to have.
McCarthy is reportedly the first quarterback in the modern era to miss his entire rookie season due to injury.
In recent years, we have seen quarterbacks get injured and knocked out for the season. Anthony Richardson last season and Joe Burrow in 2020 are two recent examples. Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League while Richardson is trending to be the next great quarterback.
McCarthy was likely to sit for quite awhile behind Sam Darnold but nobody thought it would be due to injury. He will still be in the meeting rooms and helping the team prepare each week. In doing so, it will continue his development.
Don't lose hope with McCarthy. He's still the future of the team.
