Jeffery Simmons broke some huge Tennessee Titans news just hours before the team was set to play their second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.
Arden Key, the Titans' primary edge defender opposite Harold Landry a year ago, was set to serve a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy based on findings that took place just a few short weeks ago. However, according to Simmons, Arden Key won his appeal and WILL NOT be facing a six-game suspension now. That is a HUGE win for the Titans!
With Arden Key back in the fold the Titans now have much improved depth along the edge of their defense. Besides Landry, Key was the only returning Titans edge defender who logged more than one sack last season. The team will now rest easy knowing that players like Rashad Weaver, Michigan rookie Jaylen Harrell, and a handful of unproven players will not be pressured to put up huge numbers off the edge.
The Titans would have had to face a daunting set of quarterbacks in their first six games with just one proven top notch edge rusher had Key been forced to sit out. But now, first overall pick Caleb Williams, Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, Anthony Richardson, and Josh Allen should have their hands full as they deal with the deadly duo of Harold Landry and Arden Key that combined for 18 sacks and nearly 90 pass rush pressures in 2023.
It is a bit out of the ordinary for a team's star player to be the one breaking news like this, so some fans might have been a bit apprehensive to believe it at first, but the news was confirmed by ESPN's Turron Davenport (among others) shortly thereafter the news dropped on Saturday.
The Titans could still look to add some edge defender help as the season approaches, but this huge news completely changes the outlook for the early portion of Tennessee's season!
