The San Francisco 49ers have had their fair share of injuries on the offensive line in training camp.

Spencer Burford's injury is the most serious, the right guard having been revealed last week as having suffered a broken hand that would keep him out for three weeks.

It was initially unclear whether Burford would require surgery, but he appeared at practice on Friday and head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed afterwards that the 2022 fourth-round pick will not require an operation.

Burford, who committed a key protection error in the 49ers' Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February, is in the mix to start at right guard, but injuries to him and veteran Jon Feliciano have seen rookie Dominick Puni take a lot of first-team reps, heightening the chances of him starting year one

Feliciano, who displaced Burford as the starting right guard in the second half of last season but suffered an injury in the Super Bowl, was back at practice on Friday having dealt with a knee issue, but starting left guard Aaron Banks was not involved because of back spasms.

Due to the number of the interior offensive line injuries, the 49ers signed veteran Pat Elflein and released rookie undrafted free agent Briason Mays. However, Elflein was seen limping out of his first practice as a Niner.

The former third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings left practice because of a calf injury, according to Shanahan.

That is obviously far from ideal for a player who has just arrived. However, with Puni seemingly making strides and holding up well after being elevated to the first string, Feliciano now back in practice and Burford set to be healthy in plenty of time for the start of the season, the 49ers look to be in a decent spot at right guard regardless of who wins the competition at that spot.
