Cowboys give themselves a tone deaf self-congratulatory pat on the back ahead of 2024 NFL season

For a long, long, long time, there's been a narrative among NFL fans surrounding the Dallas Cowboys that goes something like this: Jerry Jones and Co. do not care about winning as long as they're making money.
Mostly, I'll admit part of that is exaggeration from a fan base that's rightfully frustrated. Chances are the people running the team, Jerry included, would love to win. However, there's certainly some question marks about their strategies to get there, which have failed to be successful in the playoffs.
With that being said, their comments regarding ticket sales in the team's opening press conference will do very little to ease the minds of a fan base that views their desire to win as underwhelming.
When asked about season ticket holders' feelings ahead of the 2024 season, the Cowboys front didn't hesitate to flex its muscles to the point that a wide-smiled Jerry even interrupted Stephen in the middle of his answer. Here's how it went.
Stephen: "We had our highest rate of renewal that we've ever had in season tickets and -"
Jerry: "And the fastest its ever happened in the league, in the NFL, excuse me Stephen."
Stephen did move on to acknowledge the Cowboys have failed in getting the job done in the playoffs and added that fans are right to be frustrated.
But it didn't take long for Jerry to double down on the tone-deaf bragging, revealing that in a recent NFL meeting, the Cowboys led the way in key renewal statistics: "Total percentage of renewal and total percentage of anything new, the Cowboys are so far ahead of the rest of them, it's unbelievable."
The self-congratulatory pat on the back inevitable led to some negative feedback and even memes on social media, unsurprisingly.
It's no secret the Cowboys have been highly successful on the money-making side of things. It's also not unbeknownst to anyone who's followed the league closely that they've changed the game of businness in the sport.
But frankly, I'm not sure one of out 10 fans cares about that. No one will gather around the water cooler and say: "Did you hear the Cowboys sold all those tickets? Hell yeah!"
And the fact that it was brought up emphatically during a press conference in which the majority of questions were about why Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb had not been extended yet certainly did not help.
The Cowboys might care about winning. But this is not the way to prove it to the fans.
