The New England Patriots made some vital changes to the quarterback room this offseason, revamping it in its entirety.
It began when Mac Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Patriots brought in veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett who had a history in New England. Fast forward to the draft, the Patriots then took Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and then selected Joe Milton III in the sixth round.
So the main question that remained was who would be starting when the season began?
And Alex Van Pelt gave a very telling answer about the current thought process.
“Jacoby, again, is our starter. He’s playing excellent football for us in the spring," Van Pelt told reporters on Tuesday. "And Drake is coming on. Until that changes, we’re going to stick with what we’ve got.”
But as he said, anything can change.
Brissett has really stepped into the mentor and leadership role, helping Maye and Milton as they get accustomed to the NFL. And he also has proven that he still has it, currently performing as the top quarterback on the team right now.
But Maye is close behind him. On Tuesday, there was an important change in the rotation of the quarterbacks during drills, with Maye now going immediately after Brissett and before Bailey Zappe.
After training camp and when the season opener inches closer, an official decision will have to be made. And Van Pelt provided some insight onto what will go into that.
“It’ll be a combination of a couple things when those decisions are made and they’ll be made together as a group with (vice president of player personnel) Eliot (Wolf) and coach Mayo," Van Pelt explained. "But when that time comes, we’ll see. There is no timetable on when that time comes.”
Maye has already showed vast growth in this short time, but he also proved that he still has some learning to do. On Tuesday, the offense struggled against the defense, with Maye throwing two interceptions during practice.
But that will happen with any quarterback, so it's good to work on this now.
And head coach Jerod Mayo likes how things are going with Maye.
“He’s doing well. He’s headed in the right direction. A lot of times people think it’s this longitudinal, just straight line up to the top, and realistically, it’s up and down, up and down, up and down. But hopefully, you end up still – from left to right – going in the right direction," Maye said. "So, he’s doing well. You guys, I’m sure, will evaluate him today at practice.”
As for that third quarterback spot, it is clearly between Milton and Zappe. So Mayo also took a moment to talk about what he's seen from the former Tennessee star.
"I think the easy thing to say is his cannon of an arm. But just his energy," Mayo added. "He has a natural leadership skill as well. He's been great for the run."
There is still plenty of time remaining, so let's see who ultimately wins. Will it be Maye or Brissett?
