According to data from USA Today (via 247Sports), a Tennessee Vols assistant coach is the highest paid at his position in college football.

And he hasn't even coached a game yet for the Volunteers.

247Sports noted this week that Tennessee linebackers coach William Inge is the highest paid linebackers coach in the nation at $720,000 annually.

From 247Sports: Inge served as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach during Washington's CFP run last season and nearly followed Kalen DeBoer to Alabama before accepting an offer he couldn't refuse at Tennessee. He inherits a talent-loaded group of linebackers in Knoxville and should bring plenty of his own flare to Tennessee with more than two decades of assistant coaching experience at the college and NFL levels. Inge coached two All-Pac 12 linebackers last season in Butkus Award finalist Edefuan Ulofoshio and senior Carson Bruener.

Inge, who spent the last two seasons as the co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Washington, initially planned to follow Kalen DeBoer to Alabama this offseason before deciding to join Josh Heupel's staff at Tennessee.

The Vols found themselves in need of a linebackers coach earlier this offseason after Brian Jean-Mary, who had been on staff at Tennessee since 2021, left to return to Michigan (Jean-Mary was the Wolverines' linebackers coach in 2020 before leaving for Knoxville).

Interestingly, a former Vols assistant coach from the Butch Jones era is also one of the highest paid assistants in college football according to the article from 247Sports.

Former Tennessee running backs coach Robert Gillespie, who is now the running backs coach at Alabama, is the highest paid running backs coach in the nation at $850,000 annually.

Gillespie, a former Florida Gators running back, was an assistant at Tennessee from 2013 to 2017.
