It was already known that the San Francisco 49ers would not be playing in Brazil or Germany this year, and the NFL confirmed on Wednesday that they will not feature in any International Series games in the 2024 season.
The 49ers will not be part of the league's games in London this year, meaning the wait for fans across the pond to watch the Niners in the the United Kingdom goes on. The 49ers last played in London in 2013, when they routed the Jacksonville Jaguars.
San Francisco's last overseas game was in 2022 in Mexico City, a blowout win over the Arizona Cardinals.
That victory was part of 10 straight reeled off by the 49ers to end the 2022 regular season, but San Francisco might have reason to be reluctant to travel to London given the substantially larger travel distance involved.
San Francisco is unbeaten across two games in London but, as the Niners prepare for another Super Bowl push in which they will ideally again want the number one seed in the NFC, head coach Kyle Shanahan would likely not be very enthusiastic about the logistical challenges that come with the games in the UK.
Though the 49ers won their last game at Wembley Stadium under Jim Harbaugh, even after a subsequent bye week, they narrowly lost their next two games and ended up finishing a game behind the Seattle Seahawks in the race for the NFC West. That proved crucial as the 49ers had to play on the road at Seattle in an infamous NFC Championship Game for the franchise.
Shanahan would likely point to that as reason to be happy to have avoided a long trip across the Atlantic. As international marketing rights holders in the UK, logic suggests the 49ers will have to make the trip eventually, but it's understandable they might be relieved to have avoided it in what could be a final 'all-in' year before quarterback Brock Purdy becomes very expensive.
