The Tennessee Titans might have to look toward what is now a thin pool of free agents to fill one of the last remaining holes on its roster.
With just a handful of starting jobs currently up for grabs the Titans will have to look at in-house options as well as veteran free agents in order to fill the starting free safety role.
Elijah Molden handled the starting duties for eight games in 2023, but he projects as a low-level starter at free safety although his versatility in the defensive backfield is certainly valuable. The Titans have been linked to veteran free agents such as Justin Simmons and Marcus Maye, but another option could now be in play after recent news.
Veteran safety Tony Jefferson announced that he plans on coming out of retirement for the 2024 season, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
Last having played for the New York Giants in 2022 the 32-year-old safety spent last season as a scouting intern for the Baltimore Ravens.
Jefferson has 10 years of NFL experience. He spent his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before signing a lucrative four-year deal worth $34 million with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017. The Ravens parted ways with Jefferson after he tore his ACL in 2019.
Jefferson would go on to miss the entire 2020 season, but eventually signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 where he played in two games before his release and eventual reunion with Baltimore. Interestingly enough, Titans general manager Ran Carthon was serving as San Fran's director of player personnel at the time.
It remains to be seen whether or not Jefferson can return to form as a starter in the NFL, but the ties to Carthon are worth noting. In his career Jefferson has totaled 492 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 24 passes defensed, 9.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and four interceptions.
