The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to a three-year contract extension worth $84.75 million on Thursday.
Waddle is set to become the fourth-highest paid wide receiver in average value per year with the news, right behind the Dolphins' very own Tyreek Hill. The latter couldn't help but show his excitement on Twitter/X with a simple but perfect reaction to the news by claiming he couldn't be happier.
At a position where players are commonly labeled as "divas" and where egos can become a real problem, it's great to see the camaraderie between Hill and Waddle. It's easy to figure out why Hill is so happy, of course, as having Waddle on the offense really helps out his game and the Dolphins offense become its dangerous self.
What makes the Hill-Waddle duo unique
Although it's true Mike McDaniel's offense will need to grow in 2024, it's still very uniquely problematic for NFL defenses. And it starts with the iconic speed that Hill and Waddle bring to the table.
The Dolphins are able to run deep routes in the time other teams run intermediate routes, consistently pushing defenders' coverages deeper down field, which eventually leads to very favorable looks for the team's running game.
It's also incredibly hard to deal with their speed without playing some sort of double coverage with a deep defender staying on top of them but occupying four defenders to stop two receivers on a down to down basis is just not viable.
Sure, the Dolphins have been beaten by more physical teams that force them to play a different brand of football and that's something McDaniel needs to fix. But making sure Hill and Waddle are around for the long run is a matter of life or death for the team as it all starts with them on the playing field.
