Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson just got paid, and in a very big way at that.
Per multiple outlets, the Vikings' star wide receiver agreed on Monday to a record-setting contract extension. The deal is reported to be four years at $140 million with $110 million guaranteed.
As Adam Schefter notes, the contract, at $35 million average annual value, makes Jefferson the highest paid non-quarterback in the history of the league. Given his astronomical start to his career, with 392 catches for 5899 yards and 71 touchdowns in his first four seasons, that's not a surprising result.
Miami Dolphins' star wideout Tyreek Hill, who's recently reportedly been interesting in getting a raise himself, congratulated his colleague on Twitter/X on Monday.
However, Dolphins general manager might not be as keen on the transaction. Hill has been just as electric for the Dolphins during his two years in South Florida. More productive, even. Where Jefferson missed a significant portion of the 2023 season with a hamstring injury, Hill has had the best kind of ability in his two years in Miami: availability.
And during those two years, no one has been better. Hill has totaled 119 catches each of the last two years with 1700+ receiving yards in each season. Had it not been for a late-season ankle injury last fall that hobbled him, Hill had a good look at becoming the first receiver to ever break 2000 receiving yards in a season. Hill has a current AAV of $30 million, per OverTheCap.com, which places him fourth in the league in AAV after the Jefferson news. For a receiver that's dominated the game, that might not cut it for much longer.
The Dolphins were certainly smart to get the Jaylen Waddle contract done before Jefferson stretched the top of the market higher. And, at least on social media, it doesn't seem like Hill is beating his chest for a new deal tomorrow.
However, it's only a matter of time before Grier likely has to act to make his superstar happy.
