The NFL offseason workout program is set to begin for the Kansas City Chiefs in less than a week. For newly-signed RB Louis Rees-Zammit, a former Welsh rugby sensation, it'll be an introduction to the NFL and his first time going through an offseason regimen.
With the first day for the Chiefs just around the corner, Rees-Zammit is out on the practice field getting some work in on his own before the real fun begins. He posted a few clips of his training on Twitter (X) as he practiced different drills with his footwork, taking handoffs, and avoiding defenders.
Rees-Zammit's 10-week crash course in football with the NFL's International Player Pathway program was only the tip of the iceberg. Sure he learned everything there is to know about the game, various positions, NFL training, and more. However, he'll soon be competing with players who've been playing football for their entire lives. It's going to be an entirely different ballgame for the Welshman. To stand out, he must master everything football on and off the field.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, the Chiefs are trying Rees-Zammit at running back and likely as a kick returner on special teams. It's certainly a position that'll be most reminiscent of his role in professional rugby. Still, the 23-year-old has plenty of work to do this offseason if he's to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster or practice squad in 2024. It's good to see he's enjoying himself and training for the opportunity ahead of him during his free time because it'll take that sort of dedication to accomplish the goals he's set out to accomplish in Kansas City.
