Players across the country are rushing to the NCAA transfer portal this month which led to some thoughts about the process from former Tennessee Vols basketball star Jordan McRae.
McRae, who played at Tennessee from 2010 to 2014, took to Twitter/X.com on Wednesday to share his thoughts on the influx of players hitting the transfer portal.
"Back in the day when a kid got zero minutes as a freshman he would probably transfer," wrote McRae. "Now, freshman year you play 29 [minutes] a game, average 11 (points per game), they still might leave…transfer portal is weird…it’s making kids run away from anything they don’t like…soft."
McRae, a former four-star recruit out of Liberty County High School in Hinesville, GA, didn't play much as a true freshman at Tennessee in 2010-11.
The former Vol appeared in 10 games as a true freshman, averaging just 5.3 minutes per game and 1.8 points per game.
McRae saw his playing time increase to 21.7 minutes per game as a sophomore before averaging over 30 minutes per game during his final two seasons with the Vols.
In 2014, McRae was a second round selection by the San Antonio Spurs. He played in 123 NBA games from 2015 to 2020.
