On3 Sports' national college football recruiting VP Steve Wiltfong made a prediction for the Volunteers to land the commitment of 2025 safety Lagonza Hayward.
Hayward is 6'1" 200 pounds and holds offers from several marquee programs. The Lyons, GA (Toombs County HS) product is listed by On3 Sports as the #83 overall prospect and #8 safety. On3 projects Tennessee and Georgia as the top two programs for his services with Tennessee being slightly ahead. Alabama and Florida State are also apparently in play.
Hayward visited Tennessee on March 23, and he apparently came away very high on the Vols and on Knoxville. He has seemed to develop a strong connection with UT defensive coordinator Tim Banks. He also apparently played putt-putt with Josh Heupel while in town and was impressed with his laid-back demeanor. It's possible he returns for the Orange and White game on April 13, which would be a great sign if Heupel and Banks can get him there.
It goes without saying that Tennessee can't seem to have enough good players in the secondary, and Hayward would help address that issue in a big way. Hayward has a big frame with another year to grow and is a thumper while also playing a deep safety/center field type role against the pass. Landing a player of the caliber of Hayward would give Tennessee a versatile defender against the run and the pass on the back line of their defense.
