NASHVILLE — The 2024 NFL Draft, rookie minicamp, and team OTAs are all in the rearview. In just a matter of weeks, training camp will begin and another NFL season will be upon us and the Tennessee Titans roster is beginning to take shape.
But even after an active offseason that included a coaching search, a blockbuster trade, and signing some of the top players available in free agency, the Titans still have a few unanswered roster questions.
None bigger than what things will look like on the right side of the offensive line once the regular season kicks off.
The Options
While Tennessee may not have an established starter at right guard or right tackle, the good news is that the options are plentiful.
Daniel Brunskill was the Titans starting right guard in 2023. Brunskill started 14 games and played over 700 snaps in total at the position while providing strong leadership in the locker room. He returns in 2024 on the final year of his contract.
2022 UDFA Andrew Rupcich also returns after getting his first bit of NFL action in 2023 at right guard. Rupcich made two starts in place of Brunskill, played in five total games, and tallied over 200 productive snaps at right guard.
Former second-round draft pick Dillon Radunz started a career-high 11 games in 2023, but the vast majority of his career snaps have come as a tackle. Radunz is making the transition to be a full-time guard in 2024 and should have a shot at winning the job in training camp.
Then there's 24-year-old Saahdiq Charles, who Tennessee signed to a one-year contract in free agency. Charles started 10 games at left guard for the Washington Commanders in 2023, but moving to the right side should not be a difficult transition. Charles is also former college teammates with Titans center Lloyd Cushenberry.
At right tackle, things remain wide open. Nicholas Petit-Frere was the full-time starter for 16 games as a rookie (2022), but missed almost all of 2023 and has yet to return to the practice field this summer. Other returners like Jaelyn Duncan and John Ojukwu do not have NFL experience on the right side, but could make that transition with JC Latham holding down the left tackle spot.
Tennessee signed veteran OT Geron Christian to a contract last week, but over 58 career games and 25 career starts, 93 percent of the snaps Christian has played are at left tackle. It's more likely that he serves as veteran depth behind Latham than the starter on the right side.
Early Predictions
So much is obviously still subject to change. Injuries or roster additions could change things drastically. Players will also have the opportunity to win starting jobs and shift the narrative during training camp. But as things stand right now, I'll go with Saahdiq Charles (RG) and Nicholas Petit-Frere (RT) as the frontrunners to win starting jobs.
The Titans signed Charles for a reason. They like how he fits in their offense and the chemistry he could have next to Cushenberry on the interior offensive line. Charles only impressed this summer, and I'm currently a believe that he will win a starting job. Daniel Brunskill would presumably be the backup center in this scenario.
At right tackle, Petit-Frere is the only player on the roster with a full year of NFL experience at the position. He has the physical tools that Bill Callahan values, and with a clean bill of health, should be able to set himself apart from the pack. That clean bill of health is, of course, a big if when it comes to Petit-Frere. But for this exercise I'll assume everyone remains at full strength.
Latham, Skoronski, Cushenberry, Charles, and Petit-Frere. That's how I see things shaking out as of now.
The most important month for the Tennessee Titans to make the playoffs in 2024
The Titans have to bring it during this month.
