The Chihuahua Caudillos (Warlords) from the Liga de Fútbol Americano of Mexico just went undefeated for the 2024 season for the second consecutive year, in no small part thanks to former Auburn Tigers quarterback Jeremy Johnson.

Before the semifinals, I wrote an in-depth story about Johnson's stay in Mexico and his re-writing of the history books in pro football of the country. On Saturday night, Johnson became the first American quarterback to win multiple rings while earning MVP honors for the big game.

He did so with a stellar performance, completing 74% of his pass attempts for 217 yards and two passing touchdowns. The cherry on top was Johnson being unleashed as a runner, something that wasn't seen all season from the Caudillos offense as he got 35 yards in four attempts and a nine-yard touchdown in read option play.

Johnson found a mismatch with the Caudillos' top receiver Malik Stanley, the product out of Louisiana Tech, exploiting it for seven completed passes and 107 yards with him. The former Tiger also connected with seven other players throughout the game.

With the Mexico Bowl VII MVP already in the bag, Johnson is the clear-cut favorite to win the season MVP as well after leading the second highest-scoring offense in undefeated fashion. The league usually awards the trophy until near the start of the following season so we'll have to wait for it to become official, however.

Going back to 2023, the Caudillos have won 22 games straight, something the coaching staff largely credits to Johnson. Although the team is filled with American and Mexican talent, Johnson’s consistency has been a game-changer for the franchise.

Johnson worked with an overhauled WR room in 2024 after losing three starters from the 2023 season, including the league’s MVP Juwan Manigo, who left for the UFL.

As for what’s next for Johnson, it remains to be seen. He’s flirted with retiring as a player since winning his first professional championship last year and has long-term goals in coaching, as he currently coaches high school quarterbacks at Montgomery Catholic. Yet, the decision has not been made.

For now, though, the usually stoic-looking quarterback is smiling wide and enjoying being a back-to-back champion.
