Chiefs safety Justin Reid is entering his third season in Kansas City. He just so happens to be the longest-tenured player in his position group alongside Deon Bush. Reid is very much the veteran in the room, taking up a leadership role with the younger players.
Speaking to media members last Friday, Reid spouted effusive praise for fourth-round draft pick Jaden Hicks.
Jaden Hicks impressing Chiefs veteran safety Justin Reid at OTAs
Dave Merritt declared just a week ago that Hicks has the chops to be a, "really good football player in this league." Now, his teammate is spilling the beans on why his coach holds that opinion.
Not only has Hicks shown that he has all of the intangible traits, but he's going the extra mile during OTAs to learn all that he possibly can from Reid.
"I love (Jaden) Hicks," Reid said. "I love him. Physical kid. Smart, athletic, (and) willing to learn. Very humble, in the sense that he's willing to take coaching. Like I've stayed after practice with him all the time. We work on little things here and there. And, and he's soaking everything up. So, he's going to be a player for us this year, he's going to help us."
At 6-foot-2 and 211 pounds, Hicks already has prototypical size. His production during the past two seasons at Washington State certainly intrigues with 155 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three interceptions, 10 passes defended, and two defensive touchdowns in 25 total games played.
If Reid thinks Hicks can contribute to the defense as a rookie, that'd be quite the development for the Chiefs. It'd add to the growing list of defensive backs who've been able to play quickly in Kansas City over the past several seasons. It'd also give Steve Spagnuolo another versatile piece to work with in the secondary.
