After months of rumors and speculation about his future, the Pittsburgh Steelers have announced a three-year contract extension for HC Mike Tomlin:
But as Coach Tomlin would allude to, the pressure is on:
Tomlin Signed to 3 Year Extension
In 17 seasons Tomlin led the Steelers to seven AFC North titles, most recently in 2020, 11 playoff berths, most recently in 2023, and two Super Bowl (XLIII and XLV) appearances.
Tomlin has a 173-100-2 (.633) regular season record. The 173 regular season wins are second most among active NFL head coaches and he has led his teams to victories in at least five home games in 16 of his first 17 seasons.
During his long tenure with the Steelers, Tomlin's teams have never had a losing record, the only head coach in NFL history to begin a head coaching tenure with at least 17 consecutive non-losing seasons. That is the third-longest streak of .500-or-better seasons by a head coach in NFL history. – Teresa Varley, Steelers
In December Pittsburgh was in the middle of a three-game skid. Many believed that would result in a losing season and back-to-back years without a postseason appearance. And while Coach T would right the ship, questions about Mike Tomlin and his tenure were reaching a fever pitch.
Talks of him joining different teams, heading to the broadcasting booth, or even stepping away entirely were being thrown out there by some of the most credible sources in media, but it all has been put to bed:
"I am appreciative for this contract extension and thankful for Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh," Tomlin told Teresa Varley of Steelers.Com "We are continuing to work diligently to get back to where we belong – sustained playoff success with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise's seventh Lombardi Trophy."
Pittsburgh hasn't incurred the playoff success that Coach Tomlin is speaking to in nearly a decade and they haven't seen Super Bowl success in over 15 years. Coach Tomlin knows that's well below expectation, and doesn't speak to his mantra, "The standard is the standard."
A three-year contract extension keeps Tomlin in Pittsburgh for another four seasons. At which point, Coach T would still be in his prime as a coach at 56 years old.
But if the Steelers don't get back to where they belong, as he said, Coach T's latest extension with Pittsburgh could be his last.
