The Kansas City Chiefs are getting back to the "legion of zoom" style of offense with the additions of wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy.
Although they won the Super Bowl, the Chiefs' offense took a step back last year due to a lack of a downfield passing game. It also put a bit of a restraint on tight end Travis Kelce's production, which resulted in his lowest amount of receiving yards since 2015.
With Brown and Worthy now in the mix, Kansas City should be much more explosive. That will open things back up for the veteran Kelce as he enters his 12th NFL season. Not only is chemistry on the field going to be important for those three, but having good relationships off the field pays dividends too, e.g. Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
When asked about what Brown and Worthy will do for the offense as a whole this season, Kelce gave them both a glowing endorsement.
“It’s unbelievable that (general manager Brett) Veach finds ways to bring in – not only guys that have talent, that have unbelievable skill sets but are good people." Kelce said. "Just being able to get to know them (Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy) over this offseason, it’s just been cool that Hollywood and X are just – they’re down to earth, humble guys and they love coming to work and they love football. When you bring that kind of mentality into a building that has that culture already set, the sky is the limit for those guys. I’m excited that they’re here.”
That is largely the culture that Veach and coach Andy Reid have built in K.C. Players love coming in every day and are willing to put in the work to meet a high standard. Even Kelce himself still brings a high amount of energy, whether it's a game or an offseason practice.
Building this type of culture is the x-factor that keeps the Chiefs on top of the NFL. Kelce, Brown, Worthy and fellow pass catcher Rashee Rice will make up one of the league's top passing attacks. Keeping these playmakers around will help extend Kelce's career, allowing him to continue to gash defenses across the middle of the field.
