If you were in St. Joseph, Missouri, to watch Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University, you might have seen some familiar faces coaching the team.

Former Chiefs Super Bowl hero running back Damien Williams has been spotted working with the running backs throughout training camp practices. But he’s not the only one out there participating as an assistant coach for Kansas City during training camp.

Williams is joined by former Chiefs wide receiver Marcus Kemp and former Chiefs safety Jordan Lucas through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. They’re working as assistant coaches with the team during training camp. You can rest assured that they’re working with their respective position groups, with Kemp coaching the wide receivers and Lucas working with the defensive backs.

Marcus Kemp’s path from undrafted free agent to coaching the Kansas City Chiefs

Kemp played for Kansas City from 2017 through 2020. He originally joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Hawaii in 2017. Kemp initially began his career on the practice squad but spent a good amount of time on the active roster as well, primarily working as a special teamer. He looked on track to contribute more on offense, but in Aug. 2019, he suffered an ACL and MCL injury that set him back in Kansas City.

Kemp was waived in December of 2020. He signed to the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad but would rejoin the Chiefs from 2020 through 2021, signing ahead of the AFC title game against the Buffalo Bills and Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kemp would play for the Chiefs last in 2022, when he signed to the practice squad in October. He caught a crucial first-down pass from Patrick Mahomes in the 2022 AFC Championship Game. He credited the work they’d put in together when Mahomes was a rookie, working behind Alex Smith in 2017. Kemp won his second Super Bowl ring when the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Jordan Lucas brings Super Bowl LIV experience to the defensive backs room

Lucas originally joined the Chiefs in Aug. 2018 when he was traded to Kansas City from Miami for a 2020 seventh-round draft pick. He became a restricted free agent following the season and received an original-round tender as a former sixth-round pick. He spent two seasons with the Chiefs playing both defense and special teams. Lucas won Super Bowl LIV with the team when Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

Lucas seems to have departed from Missouri Western State, but spent about 12 days working with the team.

The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship continues to serve as an NFL pipeline

Kemp and Lucas are not the only ones participating in Kansas City through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. The Chiefs also have Wake Forest running backs coach Effrem Reed, Georgia quarterbacks coach David Whitlow, and University of Arizona cornerbacks coach Chip Viney working with the team, among others.

This coaching fellowship has led to opportunities for coaches to join the Chiefs’ coaching staff in the past. Defensive quality control coach Chris Orr, for instance, was previously a coaching fellow for Kansas City. It’s certainly a pipeline to the NFL, and it could lead to opportunities for Damien Williams, Marcus Kemp, and Jordan Lucas with the staff in the future.

Other Kansas City Chiefs visitors at training camp on Tuesday

The Chiefs invited several former players back to training camp for practice on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Dwayne Bowe was spotted chopping it up with Travis Kelce ahead of practice. Tyrann Mathieu was seen walking down the hill to the practice field with the coaching staff. Trent Green was spotted out at training camp as well.
