The Sooners are set to host one of the best wide receivers in the country this weekend. Marcus Harris, wide receiver from the storied Mater Dei program in Santa Ana, CA has been a highly sought after wide receiver recruit for a couple years, debuting as a fringe five star player according to multiple recruiting services.
He has over 30 FBS offers ranging from Georgia, to Oregon, to Tennessee, to Texas. It's going to be tough for Brent Venables and the Sooners to lure him to Norman, but that's what they're hoping to do as his recruiting search is narrowing down this month. But what makes Harris so good? And where will he land?
Marcus Harris' sweet wide receiver skills
As a sophomore for one of the best high school football programs in the nation Harris starred immediately, putting up over 600 yards and a dozen receiving touchdowns. Then last season he matched that yardage total again helping Mater Dei win a state championship!
Those back to back special seasons have sent his hype train off the rails for many as he continues to win with legit track speed, advanced route running, footwork, and absolutely arrogant hands. He'll be making his fourth visit in the last month to Oklahoma this weekend after having seen Georgia, UCLA, and Tennessee already.
Harris fits the perfect mold that Venables and wide receivers coach Emmett Jones have been bringing in for the last couple seasons. Nice vertical speed, technical route running, decisive play style with the ball in his hands. He would be a plug and play talent.
Where will Marcus Harris commit?
It's difficult to tell just where Harris will play as of today, but a handful in the recruiting industry are favoring UCLA coming off his official visit there earlier this month. The Bruins are desperate for playmakers and they–along with USC–are pushing for him hard. USC, however, doesn't seem to be a leader for him anymore now that he's chosen against setting an official visit there.
Harris has visited both Texas and Oregon at least four times throughout his recruiting journey, so both programs have long been thought of as favorites to land Harris, but the Ducks aren't getting an official either.
Georgia and Tennessee have been late risers in his process, both earning officials in the last month, but their history with Harris is rather short. Both are still in the mix, but look like longer shots to land him.
Oklahoma however, may have a leg up if they can seal the deal this weekend on his visit (to hopefully keep him away from Texas). Texas is hosting him on the weekend of the 21st, but the Sooners get to make their final impression first. Both teams have been pursuing him since early in 2022. Both coaching staffs have strong long-term relationships with Harris. But the Sooners may be able to offer him a better shot at early playing time given that their top four wide receivers could all depart after 2024.
Harris hasn't set his commitment date yet, but outside of UCLA, the Sooners and Longhorns seem like decent bets to steal him away here as his recruitment nears its conclusion.
