Former Tennessee Vols running back Jaylen Wright had to wait until day three of the 2024 NFL Draft to hear his name called, but it was worth the wait.

The Miami Dolphins selected Wright in the fourth round (No. 120) on Saturday.

Landing with the Dolphins is a great situation for the former Vol.

Miami head coach Mike McDaniel is known as a run-game savant. Just this past season, Raheem Mostert rushed for 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Dolphins in his age 31 season. McDaniel knows how to put running backs in a position to succeed.

McDaniel's system relies primarily on outside-zone concepts. Running backs in McDaniel's offense have to show patience while behind the line of scrimmage before identifying which gap to attack before exploding through the hole for a large gain.

Wright showed improved patience throughout his career at Tennessee. He would often wait for his blocks to develop before making his move, which often resulted in a big gain. McDaniel's system is a perfect match for Wright's skillset.

With Mostert entering his age 32 season, the Dolphins needed another running back to pair with De’Von Achane. Wright, who is only 21, should be able to fill that role for years to come.

Mostert, by the way, is under contract in Miami for two more seasons, though the Dolphins can move on from him after the 2024 season with just a $1 million dead cap hit.
