The Minnesota Vikings entered the 2024 NFL Draft as a potential agent of chaos. Armed with the 11th and 23rd overall selections and the need for a quarterback, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was ready to strike. He moved up twice and used the 10th and 17th picks.
We expected movement in the first round but not in this way. The Vikings walked away with QB J.J. McCarthy and EDGE Dallas Turner in Round 1, which will help the Vikings immediately in 2024. However, even after adding these two, the Vikings enter Day 2 without a selection. They have five draft picks on Day 3.
Vikings Team Needs After 2024 NFL Draft
McCarthy may not play in 2024 but should compete with Sam Darnold for the starting gig. Darnold has never been impressive, so it's fair to assume the rookie will have the leg up before too long. Turner, however, should get on the field as soon as the year begins.
With more holes across a defense that fell apart at the end of the 2023 season, here are some positions the Vikings can't afford to pass on when Saturday arrives.
Wide Receiver
Finding a third receiver to compete with Brandon Powell is an important role. Sure, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison are a terrific duo, but Kevin O'Connell can't bank on two guys all season long. One injury would ravage the unit. This is a deep-receiving class, so they'll have the opportunities.
Using the 108th overall pick might be necessary for an immediate contributor. They'll have to get a little lucky to land a speedster who can complement who is already there. Jamari Thrash or Jacob Cowing would be fitting K.J. Osborn replacements.
Offensive Guard
Does O'Connell and his staff trust Blake Brandel to earn the starting left guard job? It's possible the Vikings will opt for a street-free agent instead of a rookie since the guard class will thin out on Day 3. This staff knows the importance of protecting the quarterback.
That said, some solid rookie guards have been taken on Day 3 over the last few years. This really comes down to scouting and confidence. The Vikings don't have extra picks to mess around with now, and the priority between guard and receiver is about equal.
Cornerback
The need at cornerback might be mitigated by the addition of Shaq Griffin and the return of Andrew Booth Jr., but Minnesota certainly can't bank on those two. Where it gets tricky is the development of recent picks Akayleb Evans and Mekhi Blackmon.
I wasn't high on either, and it seems as though Flores hid them as much as he could. But young players can make the jump with a better pass-rush assisting. Adding another body who can compete as a slot defender makes a ton of sense.
Defensive Line
Flores will need some more horses in the trenches. The current defensive line group is awful. Thankfully, it's relatively easy to find cheap veteran tackles and big ends in free agency, and even on Day 3 of the draft.
This was never a spot where Minnesota would have to invest more than a late pick or two. I'd love to see them add a nose tackle and an end.
