Minnesota Vikings make necessary roster move after dealing with unfortunate circumstances during training camp
There are issues during training camp that pop up consistently, and the Minnesota Vikings addressed one of them on Sunday.
After the four-day acclimation period of training camp, the Minnesota Vikings have had a couple of things pop up, including some minor injuries. James Pierre and Isaiah Rodgers have each missed practice time with minor injuries, and the Vikings have addressed the depth at the position.
On their off-day on Sunday, the Vikings have signed cornerback Jarod Washington and waived running back Kejon Owens with a non-football illness designation.
Minnesota Vikings make two roster moves
This isn’t a move to create depth for the regular season, but rather to make sure the Vikings have enough depth to get through practices and the preseason. Washington is a rookie out of South Carolina State, who spent time at rookie minicamp with the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last season per the Vikings press release, Washington was a first-team FCS All-American, collecting 33 tackles, one tackle for loss, 22 passes defended, and one forced fumble.
He has ample size for the position and experience at 24 years old at 5-11 and 210 pounds, and will get opportunities to get on the field. He is very unlikely to make the 53-man roster, but a practice squad spot is certainly in play.
Owens was placed on the active/non-football illness list to start training camp, which prompted the Vikings to add Jordan Mims. Now, Owens hits the free agent market. There certainly is a possibility that he could return to the Vikings once he gets healthy, but he won’t be with the Vikings immediately.
