The Miami Dolphins have taken a step to chase a Super Bowl ring by bringing a player with two of them on board.
The Dolphins reportedly agreed to terms with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer edge rusher Shaq Barrett on Tuesday, per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz.
Barrett was released by the Buccaneers back on February 27. He started his career with the Denver Broncos back in 2015, winning a Super Bowl in his rookie campaign where he played in all games with 6 starts in the regular season. He signed with the Buccaneers in 2019 and made an immediate impact, leading the NFL in sacks that season with 19.5 and earning the first of his two Pro Bowl nods.
He was a force off the edge for the Bucs in the 2020 postseason tallying four sacks in four games. He helped the Bucs claim Super Bowl LV 31-9 over the Kansas City Chiefs, earning his second Super Bowl ring.
Barrett has a solid chance to begin the season as a starter for the Dolphins' defense. Both Jaelan Phillips (achilles) and Bradley Chubb (ACL) suffered major injuries after Thanksgiving, both of which have long timetables for recovery. It's possible one or both are back, but obviously the Dolphins are gearing up for the possibility of needing someone to start the season.
And even if they're back, Miami learned the importance of never having too many pass rushers last year when they had to sign a host of past-their-prime players to play against Kansas City in the playoffs.
Barrett gives them a good option with upside if he can regain his form from two or three years ago.
