The pool of potential NFL free agent wide receivers was always going to be shallow this off-season. If Mike Evans, Michael Pittman Jr., or Tee Higgins had hit the open market that would have changed things dramatically, but with all three returning to their original teams the wide receiver pool in free agency is already drying up quickly.

The top remaining receivers on the market are reportedly all struggling to get the offers that they want in free agency and the strong incoming rookie wide receiver class likely has something to do with it.

When I asked people this morning how many rookie receivers they preferred versus the remaining free agent wide receivers the results were telling (update to this post: Darnell Mooney has signed with the Falcons).

This incoming wide receiver class could have up to seven wide receivers selected inside round one, so it's no surprise that most fans prefer at least 4-6 rookies to any of the receivers still on the market.

Marquise Brown, Calvin Ridley, and all of the remaining free agent wide receivers have been proven producers at various points in their NFL careers. However, the allure of adding Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Malik Nabers (LSU), Rome Odunze (Washington), Brian Thomas Jr. (LSU) and many more star rookies has NFL teams rethinking their priorities in this free agency cycle.

Based on recent large sample mock draft data there should be 12-13 wide receivers selected inside the first 75 NFL Draft picks this year, which means the depth of rookie talent is potentially greater than it has been in several years.

The first major domino has fallen this morning as Darnell Mooney laid plans to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, but expect a slow market for remaining free agents. If your favorite NFL team is hoping to improve the position they might be better off waiting until the 2024 NFL Draft.
