The San Francisco 49ers have seen their interior defensive line depth significantly decreased in recent days, but they have made a move to reinforce what has become an area of need with the signing of Jordan Elliott.
San Francisco, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, has agreed a two-year, $10 million deal with Elliott, a former third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns.
Elliott has been a mainstay of the Cleveland defensive line over the last two seasons, starting 31 games and registering 4.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss in that time.
His signing follows the 49ers' reported decision to release starting defensive tackle Arik Armstead, their longest-tenured player, following his refusal to take a pay cut as part of a contract restructure. His release is not yet official. Additionally, the 49ers saw their 14th overall pick from 2020, Javon Kinlaw, agree to a one-year deal with the New York Jets.
Kevin Givens and Sebastian Joseph-Day, who signed with the 49ers in December, remain on the open market.
The 49ers also have 11 draft picks with which to attack their various needs, and it is difficult not to see them spending at least one on the interior of the defensive trenches.
But after seeing their run defense struggle down the stretch as Armstead missed the final five games of the regular season with knee and foot injuries, the 49ers will be happy to add a player of Elliott's experience and durability.
