NASHVILLE — It's no secret that the Tennessee Titans are in the market for a quarterback. Whether it be through free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft, the Titans are looking to add a QB to their roster to compete for the backup job.
Based on what GM Ran Carthon and head coach Brian Callahan said at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, it would seem the QB2 job is still up for grabs and Malik Willis' spot is not secure.
Tennessee's search for a backup quarterback has started to heat up on day two of NFL free agency with a handful of quarterbacks already finding new homes.
I'm expecting the Titans to target a veteran quarterback with starting experience in the NFL. Brian Callahan told local media members at the combine that he values a backup QB that is capable of carrying a team through a 2-3 game stretch if called upon.
Should something happen to Will Levis in 2024, the Titans need a backup quarterback who can step in and make the transition seamless. I don't believe Malik Willis is that guy. I'm not sure a late-round rookie can be either.
Most of the veteran quarterbacks I had on my list of free agent targets have already signed elsewhere. Mitch Trubisky is heading back to Buffalo, Jacoby Brissett is heading back to New England, Drew Lock signed with the Giants, and Jameis Winston is joining the Cleveland Browns.
Then there's Sam Darnold and Gardner Minshew, who may have found themselves starting jobs in Minnesota and Las Vegas.
Who does that leave for the Titans? Keep an eye on Joe Flacco. AtoZ Sports has learned that Flacco is a legitimate candidate to join the quarterback room in Tennessee.
The 39-year-old won AP Comeback Player of the Year with the Cleveland Browns in 2023. Flacco went 4-1 as the Browns' starting quarterback averaging 323.3 passing yards per game. Flacco proved last season that he still has what it takes to win as an NFL starter. Adding that, as well as his veteran leadership, would be a huge addition to the Titans' quarterback room.
Other notable free agent quarterbacks include Carson Wentz, Mason Rudolph, Joshua Dobbs, and Tyler Huntley. According Dianna Russini, Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will join that group when he is released tomorrow.
