While the Pittsburgh Steelers' current QBs haven't even played a snap, there is already plenty of discussion on what will happen to Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
And while it seems awfully premature to be making wholesale claims on who will be the starter and will happen after, NFL executives are doing just that.
Former Steelers starter Willie Colon has had enough of it:
Total B.S
“It’s BS. It’s all nonsense," Colon said on The Carton Show. "The starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers right now is Russell Wilson."
Colon's statement stems from comments that Adam Schefter made during NFL Live last week:
“There’s no commitment, obligation, loyalty to any of these guys [Russell Wilson, Justin Fields]. They didn’t pay much for either one of them," Schefter said on ESPN. "I even had one executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him, Russell Wilson, during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”
Look, I'm no NFL executive but the idea of releasing Wilson goes completely against everything Pittsburgh has done this offseason.
One of the most desirable factors about Wilson is the league minimum contract he signed.
Even if he was bad or lost to Fields in a camp battle, Pittsburgh is paying a mere $1.2 million for a backup QB with a Super Bowl ring.
Not to mention, Wilson and Fields are literally the only QBs on the roster right now.
And I'm sure Pittsburgh will add more arms in the draft or via undrafted free agency, but then you're betting on a QB who has yet to play an injury-free season (Fields) and a rookie.
So sorry, but whether he starts or not, Wilson will be on the Steelers for the duration of 2024.
