Ohio State wants its defense to take another big step forward in 2024 after improving over the last couple of years.
It should have a chance to do just that and one returning player is changing positions and it’s one that was easy to see coming.
Sonny Styles played safety for the Buckeyes the last two seasons and is now listed at 6-foot-4 inches and 235 pounds. The change was always inevitable with the way that Styles has grown into his body.
Styles is in line to be the team’s starting WILL in 2024. Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg are off to the NFL, so it is time for the next few Buckeyes to step up. Cody Simon has plenty of experience and is in line to be the starting MIKE. C.J. Hicks is first up to be that third guy.
As a sophomore, Styles made 53 tackles and two sacks. He played in 10 games as a freshman to get his feet wet and had nine tackles.
Ohio State’s safeties coach Matt Guerrieri hinted in the past that Styles would be making a move and it’s been a pretty loud secret for some time.
“Without getting into specifics, we’re going to take a look at a number of different things for him and put him in the best position for him to be successful and the team to be successful,” Guerrieri said.
Styles is going to be a very athletic linebacker that can get downhill and fly around. A multi-sport athlete in high school who was head and shoulders above most of his opposition due to his athleticism.
As a junior linebacker, Styles has the chance to give the Buckeyes one of the better coverage linebackers that they have had in some time.
Justin Fields has a new potential landing spot via trade that should excite many Buckeye fans
It would be a fresh start for Justin Fields.
