Dave Canales shut down any chance that the Carolina Panthers would pursue Russell Wilson, who will be released by the Denver Broncos.

Canales was Wilson's quarterback coach during both of their tenures with the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite the history, the coach shut down any chance that Wilson would be venturing to Charlotte to complicate the Bryce Young experiment.

“This is not the situation for Russ,” Canales said on the Up & Adams show Wednesday.

“But what I will say about him is taking that chance and that opportunity to go to Denver, I really admire him for that. I really admire the courage that it took to say, ‘I’m going to branch out away from what I’m comfortable with.’

“Certainly, from guys like me, who was with him for all 10 years [in Seattle], the level of comfort that comes from ‘I know everything that he’s going to ask for, I can anticipate those things.’ And he really gambled on himself to go and try to do something a different way to see what that could become. What that’s become, hey, the film’s out there, but I really give him credit for that.”

Canales is supposedly a quarterback whisperer.

The Panthers brought him in to help rebuild Young, who struggled through one of the most unimpressive rookie seasons in recent NFL history.

Passing on Wilson makes sense for the Panthers. He is past his prime. He hasn't been effective since leaving Seattle. And besides, Young still has enough talent to be a good NFL quarterback in time.
